It looks like Wales will be following Scotland’s lead in scrapping the right to buy scheme. This scheme was a pioneering policy of Margaret Thatcher’s government of the early 80’s which allowed council tenants to buy their homes at reductions.

The idea was to create a ‘property owning democracy’ however, critics point to the fact that it has greatly reduced social housing numbers with many properties indirectly ending up in the private rented sector.

It is a is and always has been a policy that divides opinion! However, in Scotland and Wales it will soon be a thing of the past.
